Approach in Developing History Curriculum

Dear colleagues,

Sincerely, South Sudan in one of the African Countries that fought for decades and achieved independence but still is yearning for peace and unity among different communities across the country.

I think South Sudan should design "Integrated Approach" in developing history curriculum and teach students in schools so as to address the issue of peace and unity. This approach is all about civic education which make connection across disciplines to life skills in real world context.
I believe, this approach is so smart because, it provides a climate in which students are involved in co-curricula or extra-curricula activities (such as games, debate, projects etc) which bring the sense of collaboration. This will also introduce them to basic and positive politics of the country, learn the different societies and relationships/interdependency of individual within the society. They become civically educated in ways that empower then with healthy knowledge about the system of the government, their rights, responsibilities, skills, values and goals for unity as future leaders in a democratic state like South Sudan.

Therefore, an integrated approach to teaching will yield into peace, unity and where diversity is seen meaningful!

What do you think about this approach?

  1. Rose I like your idea, Integrated Approach is good,it would help the curriculum developers to develop history curriculum containing general knowledge and expose learners in to critical thinking and discussion with different learners from different parts of the country. for example learning about culture of people of South Sudan would help learners know about each other and respect each others culture
and is very important for learners to involve in debates from different topics in history, which extends student view on issues and learn how to talk in diverse community.

  2. I agree with you Rose on the idea of extra-curricula activities ,may be the only way to unit our students and remove from their minds the culture of war which is almost part of their life, through their involvement in these activities they will build a peaceful relations within themselves and open their eyes for the love and development of the country.

  3. I appreciate your perspective on the integrated approach especially the idea of teaching students to make connections across multiple content areas and to out of school activities. If students can see that history is more than just dates, but something relevant to their lives they will be engaged. Also the extra curricular activities and connections can hopefully work to increase democratic participation since they might have the chance to practice democratic decissino making in a safe environment of school!

    Very well said!
